Job Location: Hybrid working, 2 days in the Brighton office (minimum), 3 from home

You’ll be joining a business that is expanding, cares about the community and the environment. You will get a 9% pension as standard, increasing to 13% company max contribution (plus your 4% = a 17% pension). Role Value Proposition:

An exciting opportunity has opened to join the UK legal team and to provide legal support to MetLife’s growing business in the UK (the “Branch”). The team is a small team who work closely with all areas of the business and advise stakeholders of all levels within the UK and, sometimes, in the wider region. The Legal Counsel role is for a UK qualified solicitor, ideally with around 3 to 4 years of post-qualification experience. As the team is small, there is plenty of opportunity for the Legal Counsel to take on responsibility and there is a very broad mix of work across all of the business lines.

Key Responsibilities:

The purpose of the Legal Counsel is to provide legal services for the UK Businesses. Key activities include:

  • Providing effective legal advice and day-to-day legal support to stakeholders in all functions.

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements including distribution agreements, terms of business, and claims related agreements.

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts including IT and licensing agreements, professional services and supplier agreements, outsourcing, marketing and non-disclosure agreements.

  • Legal lead on a range of strategic and regulatory projects.

  • Providing advice and ability to deal with a wide range of legal and regulatory matters across the business lines.

  • Supporting the UK Head of Legal on any issues arising from the day-to-day activities of the Branch.

  • Undertaking legal research and monitoring changes in legislation.

  • Providing support to the marketing team, including reviewing a wide range of marketing collateral.

  • Supporting the claims team.

  • Ability to provide legal advice for the UK on various European wide initiatives, including data privacy considerations.

  • Procurement activities.

  • Data protection/privacy (including also Intellectual property/information technology).

  • New business opportunities.

  • US reporting requirements.

Essential Business Experience

Required:

  • Will have gained good, robust legal training and be around 3 - 4 years PQE.

  • Proven background of building collaborative partnerships and maintaining internal and external stakeholder trust and confidence

Preferred:

  • Ability to work under pressure of tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work as a team member, both within the legal function, and with business colleagues across the relevant business areas as a true partner.

  • Ability to work unaided in a generalist role.

  • Ability to work independently without overly granular supervision and to learn quickly, think analytically, problem solve and ask the right questions.

  • A flexible approach to meet the changing priorities of the MetLife European Legal team and the growing businesses.

Essential Technical Skills:

Required:

  • Qualified Solicitor.

  • Outstanding communication, organisational and interpersonal skills and utilisation of these skills in advising / influencing at all levels.

Preferred:

  • Ability and willingness to learn quickly and ask the right questions. High commercial focus.

  • Technical skills in advising on and drafting commercial agreements.

  • Knowledge of Irish insurance / regulatory law preferable.
