This role reports to the AVP - Corporate Accounting Policy and Group Operations within the Technical Accounting Group (TAG). TAG has the corporate-wide responsibility (1) to establish, monitor and provide assurance that the accounting policies of MetLife worldwide are in accordance with applicable authoritative guidance, (2) to partner with business unit personnel across all regions and lines of business to ensure timely and accurate implementation, interpretation and administration of these policies and (3) to influence standard setters to ensure prospective changes to accounting principles fully consider the views of MetLife and the insurance industry.

This position would primarily support development of accounting policies and accounting advisory work supporting our investment portfolio in our general account portfolio as well as supporting our third-party asset management business in MetLife Investment Management Group (MIM).

This role requires significant knowledge of US GAAP, US Statutory and IFRS as they apply to various investment products and funds; project management and experience in financial controls and processes would be an asset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs research and develops recommendations associated with investments held by our general account portfolio and/or managed by MIM.

  • Perform reviews of the financial statement disclosures associated with investment transactions under both US GAAP and US Statutory, including the review of various notes to the financial statements and prepares recommendations for the resolution of accounting issues that arise during this process.

  • Develops accounting recommendations associated with various strategic initiatives, including overseeing the implementation and operationalization of those accounting recommendations.

  • Develops and delivers relevant and timely education sessions to finance and other personnel.

  • Monitors developments under US GAAP and US Statutory and provides a summary of potential implications associated with the proposals in partnership with internal stakeholders.

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required:

  • Ability to analyze complex accounting issues and transactions and develop accounting conclusions and recommendations.

  • Strong presentation skills - ability to explain and summarize complex concepts in accurate and practical terms, alternative accounting treatments and associated cost / benefits to stakeholders.

  • Ability to work across matrix organization to review and develop accounting alternatives and recommendations.

  • Experience in accounting for a variety of asset types, including financial instruments and alternative investments.

Preferred:

  • CPA license required to be maintained, Undergraduate degree required, MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
