The Team You Will Join

Global Government Relations (GGR) works with business lines and enterprise functions on MetLife’s engagement in public policy matters at various levels of government in the U.S. and across the globe. Through these collaborative partnerships, we are able to formulate the best advocacy strategy to meet the needs of the company and its stakeholders. In addition to leveraging our relationships with government officials, our advocacy strategies draw upon internal resources such as the grassroots program, Global Communications, and Global Sustainability, to name a few. We also deploy external resources, including industry associations, coalitions, think tanks, and the media. These efforts ensure that we are well-positioned to influence outcomes and achieve desired results.

The Opportunity

The incumbent will serve as a leading member of the Global Regulatory Policy team (GRP), developing and executing MetLife advocacy efforts within GRP’s policy portfolio. Drawing on the incumbent’s professional strengths and skill set, responsibilities will evolve with the needs of the company and the team. The incumbent will convene internal stakeholders across the enterprise to develop MetLife positioning and responses to legislative, regulatory, and policy proposals and engage across the stakeholder set to advance MetLife’s interests. The AVP will promote a collaborative work environment with colleagues across MetLife’s global Government Relations team, and with other internal stakeholders, helping them to leverage each other’s strengths and build and maintain a strong network of relationships with policymakers, domestically and globally. GRP is responsible for advocacy across primary insurance regulatory policy areas including capital, solvency, liquidity and investments, and broader financial sector policy fields such as systemic risk, and Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies.

How You’ll Help Us Build a Confident Future:

Responsible for a wide variety of functions that advance GRP’s advocacy objectives in the Unites States and globally:

  • Developing and implementing results-driven advocacy strategies to advance key business priorities.

  • Establishing tracking of developing policy initiatives in multiple jurisdictions (domestic and international) that may affect the company.

  • Delivering timely communications to internal stakeholders regarding regulatory, legislative, and policy developments that could impact the business.

  • Supporting executive meeting preparations.

  • Establishing trusted relationships with key business partners across the company, including the Sustainability Office, Risk Department, Finance Department, and Law Department.

  • Representing the company at key industry, governmental and third-party meetings or events and advancing advocacy for the company’s policy positions.

  • Collaborating within and across teams to achieve common goals.

  • Participating in and/or managing internal and external meetings and events.

  • Coordinating advocacy efforts with those of Government Relations peers in a high-performing, collaborative team environment.

What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications):

  • A minimum of eight to ten years of relevant policy advocacy experience.

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.

  • A strong understanding of regulatory processes and experience with policy and legislative activities specific to the insurance and/or financial services sector.

  • An understanding of the standards and policy development process, encompassing international, multilateral, and domestic policymaking in the insurance/financial service sectors policy landscape.

  • Proven relationship and coalition building skills. A team player with a proactive approach to people and issues management. Must partner with others across the organization with candor and transparency. Demonstrated ability to operate within a global environment with cultural agility.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, capacity for learning and articulating new and existing concepts, ability to think strategically, organizational capabilities, effective problem-solving and conflict resolution, and customer-centricity.

  • Highly self-motivated work ethic: demonstrating sound judgment, trustworthiness, initiative, and an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

What Will Give You an Edge (Additional Skills)

  • Experience as a government relations specialist with a global financial services company is preferred.

  • Experience in a relevant governmental, legislative or supervisory body highly valued.

Salary Range: The wage range for applicants for this position is between $154,700 and $206,300.
