The Role :

The Assistant Portfolio Manager of the MIM Debt Separate Account Platform is a position that has evolved over the last 5 years as part of the standard portfolio management structure for managing third party investors. While MIM was building out the MIM SA debt platform in 2013, the portfolio management roles were limited to a Portfolio Manager and a Client Relationship Manager. As the number of SAs grew and with launch of the Commercial Mortgage Income Fund in September 2015, the business management model for MIM Debt products evolved into a Portfolio Manager, an Assistant Portfolio Manager and supporting Analysts.

The Assistant Portfolio Manager is critical to the success of the debt separate account platform by managing the day-to-day execution of investors’ mandates. These responsibilities include following strictly the MIM Debt allocation policy in presenting investment opportunities to our investors, active and positive communication with these investors, overseeing timely investor reporting, assisting the PM with the execution of Investment Management Agreements with new clients, overseeing all audit/compliance requests, setting up and participating in client quarterly and annual portfolio presentations, and most important in a limited capacity, be the back-up for the Senior Portfolio Manager.

Another major responsibility of the Portfolio Manager is to assist the Institutional Client Group (sales team) in marketing presentations and due diligence requests which includes a significant commitment of time and it is essential for the Assistant Portfolio Manager to have the skill sets to manage and communicate independently the day-to-day process meeting client expectations and ad hoc requests.

  • Key Stakeholders : Works in partnership with Client Services Group, Institutional Client Group, Real Estate Risk/Research/Analytics Group, DSG senior management, Legal and the Real Estate’s Regional Offices throughout the US.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overall manage the day-to-day operations of the debt separate account platform process with the goal of maintaining excellent client relationships while delivering as much as possible AUM and fees to MIM. Currently this position manages 21 separate accounts totaling $5.2 billion in Assets Under Management.

  • Maintain personal and constant communication with our investors on transactions, reports, portfolio performance and any ad hoc questions on a timely basis.

  • Attend all Debt Investment Committee meetings on transactions that meet any of our clients’ investment parameters and be prepared to answer client questions regarding the transactions.

  • Responsible for the allocation and delivery of transactions plus all due diligence reports to each client that meet the client’s investment parameters while following strict allocation policies and procedures.

  • Manage and communicate with all our partners (ICG, CSG, RR&A, Legal, Audit, Compliance, IT, RE Regional network) that support our business and are essential to the success and growth of the MIM DSG SA platform.

  • Responsible for responding to both external and internal audits related to the debt managed account platform.

  • Assist and contribute in the analysis of investor portfolios with the Portfolio Manager offering strategies and alternatives to meet the needs and guidelines of each client...

  • Oversee the execution, review and delivery of investor reports on a quarterly basis.

  • Assist the Portfolio Manager with the negotiations of management agreements and on-boarding new clients.

  • Responsible for setting up and participating in client quarterly portfolio updates via teleconference and in persons annual presentations to investors.

  • Work with our internal partners and the PM to on continuous improvements to improve our process in an effort to be more efficient and cut expenses to manage the platform. (innovation skills)

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 10-15 years of Real Estate Investment experience with strong knowledge of institutional commercial mortgage lending.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable business-related field; MBA/CPA preferred.

  • A minimum of 5 years with investor/borrower interaction and communication.

  • Strong presentation skills - must be comfortable and confident presenting to existing and potential new clients.

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and financial modelling involving real estate investments.

  • Experience in managing complex processes and procedures that are subject to internal and external compliance and audit reviews.

  • Strong organization skills
